Even though the term itself frequently circulates in various media, many people continue to ask the question: Ransomware – what is it anyway? Extortion software, or ransomware, has long been a serious threat. It is a type of malware that infects devices, networks and data centers. It either encrypts certain data that is on your hard drive or completely blocks access to the entire system. A ransom is then demanded to unlock the system or the encrypted data again. However, the payment will not always allow you to restore the data, be that intentional or due to unreliable procedures on the blackmailer's part, so you end up losing not only access to your PC, but also a lot of money.
With SecuLution you don't have to worry anymore. We offer reliable ransomware protection for endpoints and networks – with a guarantee!
If you want to offer the highest possible security to your corporate network and all the end devices connected to it – whether desktop PCs, laptops, tablets or even smartphones – you cannot do without reliable ransomware protection. Our antivirus solution relies on a powerful whitelisting principle that protects your devices and business networks from all types of cyberthreats. Your benefits are obvious:
The ransomware can enter your computer through various ways. Especially often, it happens via infected email attachments or a website that contains malware. Common tips, such as not opening unknown attachments in mails or not downloading from unknown sources (while still valid), only protect against the threat of ransomware to a rather limited extent anymore, nowadays.
But what does targeted protection against ransomware look like? Do antivirus programs help against this threat? And what other ways are there to protect networks effectively? We will show you what you can do to secure your computer.
It goes without saying that you should always be careful not to visit insecure websites or open unknown attachments from emails. However, alongside these now common tips, you should definitely take additional measures to protect your network from ransomware.
You wonder why a classic antivirus program is not sufficient as ransomware protection? The problem with such programs, no matter what extensions are advertised, is that they fundamentally still work with a blacklist. This list includes everything that is forbidden to run. However, the programs often do not detect any new or unknown malware because it is still absent from the list. The safer solution? A protection system that works with the inverse: a whitelist that only allows programs to run which are in fact necessary to get the job done. This approach is still rather unique, since historically, it required immense administrative efforts. With that balance tilting the other way in the digital arms race however, why keep clinging to increasingly unreliable protection systems? And this is where SecuLution comes in: We maintain the whitelist for you, automatically! Lean back, because you can depend on our guaranteed protection against ransomware and other cyberthreats. Learn more about our continuously evolving endpoint solution now.
Benefit from reliable protection against computer viruses, tamper protection of software and integrity protection of endpoints through the interaction of server and cloud – whether for your corporate network or for critical infrastructures such as hospitals. Ransomware is malware that can be used to extort money from users, which is why the term "extortion software" is also common. Infected systems have their data encrypted in such a way that the user can no longer access it without transferring a sum of money within a timed ultimatum. However, doing so does not actually guarantee that the blockade will be lifted. Both simple malice on the attacker's part, or technical difficulties with the decryption process still make paying a gamble, at best – especially in case of a targeted attack.
An attack with ransomware is usually quite obvious, as the user can no longer access their data - instead, the screen is blocked with a "ransom note" instructing the user how to transfer money in order to unlock their own data again. However, some types of ransomware do not become immediately apparent; here, similar signs can indicate an attack as with other malware, i.e. crashes, or significantly degraded performance. That's because the ransomware's encryption process may still be active in the background, needing some more time and resources to complete the encrypting of all files before locking the user out and prompting them with the ransom notification.
There are several ways to protect your own computer or company network from ransomware. Regular backups and updates are a first step to reduce the damage caused by an attack. An antivirus solution with whitelisting is particularly secure: Here, only trusted and permitted files are executed, all others are blocked. Ransomware is thus rendered incapable of causing damage.
