Antivirus against cyber attacks:
What are the options?

The number of cyber attacks has also been rising permanently in companies for years. A fact that causes company owners and IT managers to break out in a sweat and calls for antivirus programs that can withstand that development. Security of company data is the most important asset of any company in the digital age.

Additionally, data security is a decisive factor in determining whether a company, regardless of its size and orientation, will continue to be successful on the market in the future. Good protection by means of an adequate virus protection program is therefore essential for survival. Most of those affected are more than aware of this; it is no coincidence that companies are investing heavily in increasingly complex security solutions. After all, virtually any computer on the company's network that is connected to the Internet can be targeted.

This applies to the clerk's PC as well as to the manager's, notebooks in the home office, tablets and smartphones. The problem becomes even more complex when private devices are also temporarily connected to the company network. Ransomware, Ransomware, trojans or viruses can gain access through all of these devices in a variety of ways and commence their attacks.

It can take months before the attack is noticed and properly identified. By then, the damage is usually irrevocably done. The situation is particularly precarious when it comes to data networks in extremely sensitive business areas, such as financial transactions, network operators, power utilities or the entire healthcare sector. The larger a company, the more urgent the need for securing the confidentiality of the flow of information - the more time and money it will need to invest in security measures. A classic antivirus can reliably protect against known malware - but it is often worryingly ineffective against new threats. Companies, in particular, simply cannot rely on the hope that they will never fall victim to such an attack. Having the best possible security instead is essential here.

With an antivirus solution that relies on whitelisting, all types of threats to the corporate network and associated endpoints can effectively be eliminated.

Your benefits at a glance - Protect your corporate network with a whitelisting antivirus

Unlike a classic antivirus program, which detects and blocks the most common malware, our antivirus solution relies on the opposite principle – thanks to an intelligent whitelist, which is constantly updated through fully automatic learning, only files required for work are approved. This results in the best possible protection against cyber threats of any kind; your end devices as well as your corporate network will be much safer with this kind of antivirus. The advantages that our concept offers you can be summarized as follows:

  • Comprehensive endpoint & network protection with guarantee
  • Whitelist principle – Feel safe while the latest malware makes headlines
  • Extensive protection – all executables, DLLs, JavaCode & USB devices
  • Stops every threat – whether ransomware, worms or unknown malware
  • Low administration effort – automated learning of trusted applications
  • Always up to date – extensive trusted application whitelist in our cloud
  • Central AdminWizard console – manage your whitelist and configurations
  • full data control – server located in your network
  • Secure even offline – hashes stored in local cache

How an antivirus based on the blacklisting principle works

An important component of a security concept is an effective antivirus. But how does it work? Basically, there are different approaches to the development of modern antivirus programs. Which type of antivirus is best for you depends on a number of factors. But when making your decision, you should first be aware of the different ways in which the software solutions work.

Classic antivirus programs are often blacklist solutions and work with a negative list. In addition, a heuristic analysis of the behavior of suspicious software derived from a sandbox is also now commonly used – in principle, the advertising promises that's how previously unknown malware can also be successfully detected. Unfortunately, the antivirus often struggles to tell the difference between legitimate software's behaviors and that of malware, which purposefully tries to throw off the heuristics. In reality, either most malware manages to successfully masquerade as legitimate software, or lot of legitimate software gets hit with false positive detections. All email attachments, new programs, addresses, targets, files from external drives, etc. are examined with high scrutiny and any new files suspected of being untrustworthy trigger an alert. This may cause alert fatigue in users, which results in users already expecting the alert before it even pops up, ready to just dismiss it without further thought – even those that were actual threats.

In other words, this type of antivirus only reliably detects malware that it already knows about. Unknown malware often remains undetected and can enter the system unhindered. This has become an ever-increasing problem simply because malware authors know about that weakness and new malware is emerging on a daily basis to exploit it. Conventional antivirus software therefore simply cannot guarantee dependable protection anymore.

The attempt to compensate for this problem usually consists of costly (both in terms of finances, and system resources) extensions such as deep learning malware detection, anti-ransomware and anti-exploit technology, although their reliability in terms of detecting new malware is equally questionable. The results are extremely complex defense strategies that are increasingly difficult to harden against cyberattacks due to their many points of failure, while at the same time being hard to keep track of for companies in terms of their functionality vs cost and time invested. In day-to-day operations, it is highly valuable to be able to simply trust the antivirus to do its job reliably, without the need for any major intervention. For this reason, whitelisting concepts have established themselves as a dependable alternative for a common antivirus program.

Functionality of an antivirus program based on the whitelisting principle

Antivirus programs functioning according to the whitelist principle, as SecuLution does, are completely different. A positive list of allowed files, programs, etc. is used as a basis instead. Anything not on that list is not allowed to be executed. Only programs necessary for the company's communication and daily work are allowed. Malware and ransomware can therefore not be executed in the first place, viruses cannot infect the system. This applies regardless of whether the attack methods are known or new.

The whitelist is stored in a database for fully automatic, or manual adjustment by authorized personnel. Systems like SecuLution currently employ automatic learning processes that adopt new programs, updates or computer configurations automatically into the database. Using modern systems like this, they can keep up to date with new legitimate programs, updates, etc. with actually relatively little effort – compared to trying to stay on top of untold amounts of new malware each day. So, it's not too dissimilar from what you're used to – we've just flipped the script since it's smarter and more reliable! And with our Cloud, SecuLution even takes care of 99% of the whitelisting effort for you.

Your antivirus from SecuLution –
Features and advantages

The basic SecuLution package includes a variety of different features that highlight the advantages of German antivirus software The SecuLution server, for example, comes already fully configured as a virtual machine. The server remains in your network and therefore under your control at all times.

All requests move exclusively between your firewall and your endpoints in the network. The server is always active. Even in offline mode, an agent on the client computer verifies the trustworthiness of all software using your locally stored hashes. The communication between server and agent is SSL-secured at all times.

Another decisive advantage, besides the high quality, is the response time of the SecuLution server. It answers all requests, even under high load, in real time with no delay.

Choose SecuLution and don't give malware any chances on your IT infrastructure. We constantly update our SecuLution Cloud Whitelist, hosted by a German data center, so that all your software automatically remains known and trusted by the whitelist, no matter the regularity of its updates.

In terms of performance, you won't notice any difference compared to regular usage: Matching the application with the whitelist takes only a few milliseconds.

Whether by phone, e-mail or during a virtual live demo: We are looking forward to answering all your questions about SecuLution Application Whitelisting for your IT security.

FAQ

Antivirus programs can be distinguished on the basis of two approaches. Classic antivirus solutions work with a blacklist; new files are compared with the identifiers of known malware and blocked if necessary. However, this approach still leaves a high risk for new, unknown attacks. This risk can, however, be avoided entirely by using the whitelisting principle instead: Only known and trusted files are allowed in this case, which increases security many times over.

Companies in particular face the major challenge of having to protect a large amount of extremely sensitive data. This includes, for example, personal customer data or internal company communications. A conventional antivirus program can often reliably filter out known threats, but without regular updates it offers virtually no protection against new threats. An antivirus solution that works according to the whitelisting principle can eliminate the risk of attack by ransomware and viruses - with minimal effort for administrators. Only programs necessary for work are allowed.

Our anti-virus program works with a centralized, cloud-based whitelist curated by employees of our company. There are several million entries of trusted applications and files in this list by now. Instead of administrators having to manage the whitelist themselves, thanks to learning hashes fully automatically, that work is already being done for you (if so desired).
